How can we help?

Secure PDF Viewer is a desktop app for reading, annotating, and protecting PDF documents on macOS, Windows, and Linux. This is the support page.

What to include

  • Your operating system, and whether it is Intel, Apple Silicon, or ARM
  • Secure PDF Viewer version (1.0, unless you are on a newer build)
  • What you were trying to do
  • What happened instead, including any message on screen

Please don’t send the PDF, and please don’t send the password. We don’t need either one to help, and a password can’t be recovered by email.

We can help with

Common questions

How do I open a PDF?

Choose Open in the toolbar, or drop the file on the window. Control–O also opens the file picker. Each document gets its own tab.

How do I highlight or add a note?

Use the markup tools at the right of the toolbar. You can highlight text, add a text note, and draw on the page. These marks sit on the page. They don’t replace the original wording of the PDF.

How do I keep my changes?

Choose Save, or press Control–S. Normal Save writes a standard PDF with your annotations. Save With Password encrypts the document for Secure PDF Viewer.

What is the difference between the two save buttons?

Normal Save is the file to share with Preview, Acrobat, or email. Save With Password is for opening again in Secure PDF Viewer. Another PDF app is not expected to show the protected document.

I forgot the password.

We can’t reset it. The password is used on your computer to encrypt and unlock the file, and it is not stored with us. Without the password, that protected copy can’t be opened.

A file will not open.

Email your operating system, the Secure PDF Viewer version, and the exact message you see. If the dialog says the password is incorrect, check the password and try again. Don’t attach the file or the password.

Where is the download for my system?

Version 1.0 currently includes the macOS Intel package. Apple Silicon, Windows x64, Linux x86_64, and Linux ARM will be posted on the download page when those installers are ready.

Which shortcuts does the app use?

Control–O opens a file. Control–S opens the save dialog when a document is open. Control–F4 closes the current tab. These use the Control key.
